Accessibility

We have made every effort to make the Southfield website accessible and easy to use for everyone, no matter what browser you choose to use, and whether or not you have any disabilities. It has been tested in Firefox and Internet Explorer 5, 6 and 7.

Please note that at the moment the website will not display correctly in Internet Explorer 7 when the 'zoom' function is used to make the whole page bigger or smaller. However the 'resize text' function does work correctly and can be used to enlarge the text. This problem will be fixed in the near future.

In particular this website has been designed so thatr:

  • Text size all the text and menus on this website can be enlarged in your browser.
  • Alt-text labels are attached to every image so that blind visitors and text browsers have a description of every picture.
  • Pictures of text are not used, with the exception of the non-JavaScript email addresses to reduce spam. This means that the user can modify the text size and colour contrast – essential for those with a vision impairment or dyslexia – it also allows a screen reader to read the content
  • Pictures and features made up of moving images that are distracting for visitors with a cognitive impairment, or interactive ‘Flash Movies’ which can present access problems for visitors who cannot use a mouse, are vision impaired or who use speech output or are not used.
  • A couple of of the pages are reliant on mini programs embedded in the page called JavaScript. In this case an alternative to the script is run when the JavaScript is turned off.
  • Taborder of the pages is logical, starting at the top menu, main content, side menu and finally right box.
  • Skip links to go straight to the main content or the side menu are hidden at the top of each page, available to voice recognition software and text browsers.
